The third edition of the popular Vodafone ICONS reality show has been launched in Accra Thursday and this year, the total prize package for the winner is a mouth-watering GH¢250,000.
The reality show, launched two years ago by mobile telecommunications giant Vodafone, gives would be musicians a unique platform to unearth their talents and achieve their dreams of hitting the international stage.
The past two editions of the show - Divas Edition (Females) and Mixed Edition (Male and Females) – did enjoy huge patronage and coming on the heels of that success is the third edition dubbed Street Edition.
The 2011 and 2012 editions saw contestants compete as a group but organizers say this year, they are focusing their attention on individuals. Contestants will therefore contest solo.
Uche Ofodile, Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone Ghana explained in an interview with Myjoyonline.com that, “the reason why we started ICONS is very much about how we can support music from a grassroots level.”
“We wanted to approach music from a 360 degree so for us, ICONS is very much around supporting music from a grassroots level. We feel that ICONS allows us to empower people to follow on their dreams.
“If your dream is to be a musician [whether] it’s a woman or it’s a man then we help you and we create a platform for you to express yourself in that manner,” she added.
According to her, the first two years of the reality show have been very exciting and stated that, past winners of the show – R&M and Black N Peach – are basking in the show’s glory and they are currently using that unique opportunity to achieve their dreams.
Touching on this year’s edition of the reality show, Uche Ofodile said, “We are taking it to the people; we want the people out there to be a lot more involved.”
Black N Peach won the 2012 edition of the reality show
Some of the interesting features of the Street Edition, she disclosed, include the Pop-Up Auditions where Ghanaians across various cities will be hit with unexpected open auditions for suitable contestants for the reality show.
There will be an ICONS bus tour throughout the country for the Pop-Up Auditions. Meanwhile, would be contestants can also apply through online auditions.
Auditions for this year’s reality show starts Saturday, June 1 and organizers hope to crown a winner by August 2013.
As usual, the show’s judges, Miss Naa, Gina West and Appietus are on board this year. Uche revealed that, “we are going to choose from each region a judge to join them on the panel to give them a view of the streets.”
Apart from those judges, the general public will have the opportunity to also express their views on the various performances by the contestants.
The GH¢250,000 total package for this year includes a cash prize, a recording contract with Universal Records, the biggest record label in the world, Uche disclosed.
The winner will also enjoy a management contract, a KIA Sportage and other mouth-watering prizes.
