Some personalities in the Ghanaian entertainment industry have been awarded by the Student Representative Council (SRC) of University of Education, Winneba.

The personalities – musicians, Kwabena Kwabena, E.L. and Atumpan, Stone Bowy; actors, Majid Michel – were awarded at an event on Monday dubbed UEW SRC Honors Night, at the Liberation Sqaure of the school.

The awards night was part of activities to mark the SRC's 7-day 'Edutainment' Week Celebration which started from Monday, April 8 and it is expected to end on Sunday, April 14.

The celebration was under the theme: 20 years of teaching and education, the role of the graduate teachers in promoting sustainable development.

The school awarded the personalities for excelling in their various fields of endeavour and also for their enormous contributions to the growth of the Ghanaian entertainment industry.

All awardees were presented at the event with the exeption of Majid Michel, who is currently in the United States. He was represented by his mother and brother.

Majid Michel was recognized for his contributions to the Ghanaian and African movie industries and also for emerging Best Actor in Africa at the 2012 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAAs).

Kwabena Kwabena, who was on May 29 honoured by the Music Department of the University of Ghana on March 29, was also awarded for holding the fort of Ghanaian hi-life music.

Prof Jonathan Ammah, Dean of Student Affairs of the University of Education presented the personalities with a plaque and a citation that read: “We honour your contribution to the showbiz industry in Ghana, the immense discipline you have exhibited over the years, in and outside your profession has been highly recognized and appreciated. Your unwavering moral standards and influence has won the admiration of all Ghanaians especially we the students of the University of Education, Winneba.

"It is refreshing to know that Ghana can still boast of stars whose underlying responsibility of social role modeling is not tanned by the pressure of spotlights and splendor of red carpets. We hope that you are motivated enough to continue and improve your efforts in uplifting the name of Ghana,” the citation added.

Kwabena Kwabena advised the students to focus on the purpose why they are in school and that, their dreams can only be realized when they work hard.

Prince Opoku (Ashis) manager of Kwabena Kwabena told Myjoyonline.com in an interview after the awards that the Asor singer feels “very honoured” and that, “if institutions recognize your efforts and contributions to society, it is a big thing.”

He added that Kwabena Kwabena has “won many awards but this one and that of University of Ghana means a lot to him.”
